KANSAS CITY, Mo.: Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class (GM2) Samuel Morris, a native of Osceola, Missouri, exemplifies dual service as both a Navy Reserve Sailor and a police officer for the city of Belton. Assigned to Navy Reserve Center Kansas City, and drilling with Naval Construction Battalion 22, Morris brings a commitment to excellence in both his military and civilian roles.
“I joined the Navy to serve my country and experience something greater than myself,” said Morris. “The Reserve allows me to do that while still being present for my family and serving my local community.”
Morris enlisted in the Navy Reserve in 2023 following four years of prior service in the U.S. Coast Guard. In his role with a cargo unit, he supports critical logistics operations that directly impact mission success.
“Our cargo unit’s role is vital to ensuring equipment and supplies are delivered where they’re needed,” Morris said. “Supporting the fleet behind the scenes is just as important as being on the frontlines.”
His experience growing up in Osceola taught him the value of hard work and mutual respect, qualities that have carried over into both of his service professions. “The people in my hometown taught me a lot about hard work and respect that still helps me succeed,” he added.
As a civilian, Morris serves as a full-time police officer, a role he says complements his duties in uniform. “The commitment and skills I use for my civilian job as a police officer are right in line with what I need to work in the Navy,” said Morris. “Both roles require discipline, situational awareness, and service to others.”
In 2024, Morris was recognized by the Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Advisory Council for removing 57 impaired drivers from Missouri roadways, an accomplishment reflecting his ongoing commitment to community safety.
“My employer has always supported my Navy service,” he said. “Having that support makes all the difference.”
Morris considers his qualification on a wide variety of equipment within the Navy as one of his proudest professional achievements. “Being proficient with things outside my comfort zone is a big benefit,” he noted.
He credits his wife and family for their unwavering support. “I thank my family and especially my wife for their continued support. Their encouragement keeps me grounded.”
When asked what being a warfighter means to him, Morris responded: “As a warfighter, readiness means overall wellness and capability, so you can succeed whenever you are needed.”
As he continues his service in both the Navy Reserve and the Belton Police Department, GM2 Morris represents the best of both worlds: a protector at home and abroad.
