GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Even with limited staffing and a steady increase in recreational use, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park rangers at Lake Lanier are staying focused on their mission: keeping the shoreline safe, accessible, and in compliance with permit guidelines. Park Ranger Adam Tom is one of several rangers conducting dock inspections regularly as part of ongoing shoreline management.
During a recent inspection, Tom visited a permitted dock to check for safety issues, structural concerns, and compliance with permit conditions. These types of inspections happen routinely, especially during peak recreation season, and are essential for protecting both the public and the lake’s natural resources.
“Safety and environmental protection are my top priorities,” Tom said. “If there’s a hazard or violation, we document it and work with the property owner to correct it. That kind of follow-through can help prevent accidents and keep the community safe.”
Lake Lanier is one of the most visited lakes managed by USACE, which puts extra pressure on rangers already working with fewer resources. Despite that, Tom says he’s motivated by the impact his work has on the community.
“I’m committed to public service. The fact that we’re working with limited staffing actually makes the job feel more meaningful. Every inspection matters,” he said. “When I know I’m helping to keep this area safe and accessible for everyone, it’s worth it.”
Tom also brings a unique perspective to the job. As a military veteran, he draws on years of discipline, attention to detail, and mission-focused work.
“During my time in the military, I learned that there’s no room for shortcuts when safety is on the line,” he said. “That mindset stuck with me. I do everything by the book, and I make sure it’s done right. That’s how I serve the public now.”
USACE park rangers at Lake Lanier manage more than just inspections. They also respond to public concerns, provide education on rules and safety, and monitor shoreline activity throughout the year. Tom says the team works hard, even when it goes unnoticed.
“I’d like people to know how much effort goes into keeping these areas open and safe,” he said. “We’re out here in all conditions, covering a lot of ground. Even when things take longer than expected, it’s because we’re doing everything we can to get it right.”
Despite the challenges, the rangers remain dedicated to their role in supporting a safe and well-managed shoreline for millions of visitors each year.
