KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan civilians in the Uzbeen Valley turned in more than 400 various pieces of ammunition to coalition forces August 4-6.

At great risk to their own safety, the civilians not only told officials from Task Force Lafayette, the French brigade in Regional Command East, where the insurgent cache was hidden, but volunteered to bring the munitions to the Task Force soldiers.

The munitions collected included 134 rockets, 249 mortar shells and 94 recoilless gun shells. Many of the munitions collected were still in the package.

The munitions will be destroyed by TF Lafayette engineers.

“The safety and security of the Afghan people drive our operations,” said Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “Taking dangerous weapons out of the insurgent’s hands is an important part of a safe, secure Afghanistan.”

Since the beginning of 2010, tips from local civilians have helped coalition forces discover and destroy munitions the insurgents planned to employ against the Afghan people.
