The U.S. Senate confirmed Gordon England as the 29th deputy secretary of defense during a Capitol Hill voice vote conducted yesterday, according to a statement from England's office.

England served as acting deputy secretary of defense and secretary of the Navy simultaneously from May 16, 2005, to Jan. 4, 2006, when he was recess-appointed by President Bush to his current position.

A native of Baltimore, England graduated from the University of Maryland in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He earned a master's degree in business administration from the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University at Fort Worth, in 1975.

England has twice served as the Navy secretary, and also was the Department of Homeland Security's first deputy secretary.

In private industry England served as executive vice president of General Dynamics Inc. from 1997 to 2001. He'd also served as the president of General Dynamics', later Lockheed's, Fort Worth aircraft company branch, and as president of General Dynamics Land Systems Co.
