President Bush today again condemned terrorists' July 7 "barbaric attacks" in London.
The president returned to the U.S. on July 8 after attending the G8 summit in Scotland with other world leaders. "While terrorists were killing innocent men and women in London," Bush said during his weekly radio address today, "leaders at the G8 were discussing how free nations can combat poverty and HIV/AIDS, create a cleaner environment and improve the lives of people everywhere."
On the morning of July 7, several bombs exploded, targeting London subway trains and a double-decker bus, according to news sources. The number of deaths has reached at least 49, but officials warn that the number could grow as some subway blast sites have not yet been reached. Over 700 were injured in the blasts.
Bush said the terrorists see free societies as "essentially corrupt and decadent." They also believe that attacks like Sept. 11, 2001, against the U.S. and these attacks against London will cause a retreat.
"They are mistaken," the president said. "The free world is united in its resolve: We will never yield to terrorists and murderers."
Bush vowed that "in the face of such adversaries, there is only one course of action. We will continue to take the fight to the enemy, and we will fight until the enemy is defeated."
As the global war on terror continues in Afghanistan, Iraq, the border regions of Pakistan, the Horn of Africa and the Philippines, the U.S. is taking measures to protect the homeland, he said.
There is no specific credible information regarding a possible attack in the U.S., the president noted. But in light of the London attacks, federal, state and local officials are a taking preventative measures to protect the country and its residents from another terrorist attack. Accordingly, the threat level has been raised from "elevated" to "high" for passenger rail, subway and bus systems.
Bush said that terrorists cannot shake this country's will. America and its allies will act decisively, he emphasized, because the future of civilization is at stake. "We know that the cause of freedom will prevail," the president stated.
"This week, there is great suffering in the city of London. Yet the British people are resilient. The nation that survived the Nazi Blitz will not be intimidated by terrorists," he said. "And just as America and Great Britain stood together to defeat the murderous ideologies of the 20th century, we again stand together to defeat the hateful ideologies of the 21st century."
