Ten enemy combatants and one Afghan National Army soldier were killed Sept. 22 during a firefight north of Deh Rahwodin Afghanistan's Uruzgan province, military officials reported today.
One coalition soldier was wounded during the incident and was taken to a nearby medical facility, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
The Afghan army unit was conducting security patrols with coalition forces when it reported being attacked by about 10 to 20 enemies firing small arms, heavy machine guns, mortar rounds, and rocket-propelled grenades.
U.S. Air Force A-10s and British Royal Air Force GR-7s and U.S. attack helicopters arrived at the scene to provide close-air support, blasting enemy positions and killing 10 enemy combatants. The A-10s expended 2,181 30 mm cannon rounds and 10 rockets, while the GR-7s expended two 500-pound bombs and 25 rockets against enemy firing positions.
Coalition aircraft flew 26 close-air-support and armed-reconnaissance sorties in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on Sept. 22. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.
Seven U.S. Air Force and French air force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.
