A roadside bomb killed a Marine assigned to Regimental Combat Team 2, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), Nov. 16 near Hadithah, Iraq, military officials reported today.
The Marine's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
In other news from Iraq, Iraqi and U.S. soldiers detained three men and confiscated an array of weapons during a hasty Nov. 16 raid near Muqdadiyah.
Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division, and U.S. troops from the 3rd Infantry Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team conducted the raid after receiving information about a weapons cache. They found an 81 mm mortar tube, three mortar rounds and a fire extinguisher filled with plastic explosives.
Troops from the 3rd Infantry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team discovered another cache near Logistics Support Area Anaconda and seized more than 40 hand grenades, 40 rockets, 13 rocket-propelled-grenade rounds, 11 land mines and 500 rounds of small-arms ammunition.
In southern Baghdad, soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division discovered a weapons cache Nov. 15. As they conducted a cordon-and-search operation on a farm, soldiers of 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, uncovered 22 60 mm mortar rounds and 18 fuses. The soldiers secured the site, and an explosives team safely detonated the munitions.
Elsewhere in Baghdad on Nov. 15, Iraqi security forces and Task Force Baghdad soldiers responded to reports of a suicide car-bomb detonation outside a restaurant in eastern Baghdad. Task Force Baghdad soldiers from 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, initially secured the site and were soon joined by Iraqi police, who took control of the situation.
In the skies over Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 60 close-air-support and armed-reconnaissance sorties Nov. 16 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Coalition aircraft also supported Iraqi and coalition ground forces operations to create a secure environment for ongoing Transitional National Assembly meetings.
U.S. Navy F/A-18s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with insurgents near Ramadi. Eight U.S. Air Force and Navy intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft also flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.
