GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba - The GTMO Girl Scout troop kicked off this year’s Girl Scout Cookie Give Away at W.T. Sampson Elementary School on July 20.

The local Girl Scout troop received Girl Scout cookies that will be distributed to service members stationed at GTMO.

“Janet Tuttle from Florida Costal Girl Scouts is on island with 1600 cases of Girl Scout cookies,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Amber Bates, information systems technician, the assistant overseas chairman for the GTMO Girl Scouts.

The cookies that GTMO’s service members will receive were donated by the Gulf Coast, Florida Council in the Fort Myers, Fla., area.

When the Girl Scouts went into their communities to sell cookies last winter, they offered customers the option to purchase cookies for service members stationed abroad.

“The Girl Scouts used the photos from last year’s Mints for Troops campaign and showed the people of Florida that Girl Scouts here were passing out their donated cookies,” said Melissa Courson, the GTMO Girl Scouts Overseas chairman. “This made people give even more knowing the troops were receiving their cookies," she said.

The service members who are stationed at GTMO enjoy a boost in moral upon receiving Girl Scout cookies.

“Receiving cookies from a well known organization like Girl Scouts brings out a lot of smiles,” said Courson. “I have seen the morale go up just from receiving these cookies."

Bringing the cookies to GTMO’s military community was a team effort.

“We had so many people just coming out to assist with the unloading and loading of cookies, and ‘having’ them get their cookies before they left was like watching kids in a candy store,” said Courson. “Everyone was so happy and laughing it really feels good to see that.”

For many service members, receiving the cookies will serve as a reminder that they are appreciated.

“I hope these cookies remind them that the people in the U.S. have not forgotten them and support them,” said Courson. “Being in a remote place such as Guantanamo Bay, a taste of home is always nice to receive.”
