Army Gen. George Casey today became the senior U.S. military commander in Iraq, taking over the reins from Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez.
Casey, who'd previously served in the Pentagon as the Army's vice chief of staff, now commands 160,000 U.S. and coalition troops that make up Multinational Forces Iraq.
The change-of-command ceremony was held at a U.S. military base in Baghdad. U.S. Central Command chief Army Gen. John Abizaid participated.
Sanchez is slated to return to his former assignment as commander of the Army's 5th Corps in Germany.
