MIAMI – Marines and sailors of the Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Continuing Promise 2010 and USS Iwo Jima visited Miami, Fla., July 19-21, in honor of commencing CP10.
In Miami, the USS Iwo Jima hosted a reception and tour of the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship for distinguished visitors to include U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command, Haitian mayor of Port de Paix, Guillet Salvador and Miami-Dade County officials.
The USS Iwo Jima commanding officer, Navy Capt. Jeff Amick, and Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force commanding officer, Lt. Col. Chris S. Richie, received a key to Miami-Dade County from county Mayor Carlos Alvarez in the efforts for providing humanitarian civic assistance to the Caribbean, Central and South America.
“This is just such a great start here in Miami,” said Capt. Thomas Negus, commodore of the USS Iwo Jima. “This is truly a very inclusive mission where we gain our strength from the diversity of everyone involved in the mission.”
CP10 is the fifth annual operation that provides the opportunity to establish partnerships with other nations, non-government organizations and international organizations. The USS Iwo Jima will bring medical, dental and civic action programs to eight nations to include Haiti, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Nicaragua, Panama and Suriname.
