Four American military police were killed and nine were wounded as the result of insurgent attacks in Iraq over the past two days, according to U.S. Central Command press releases.

One 220th MP Brigade soldier was killed and two were wounded Oct. 17 when an improvised bomb went off in the Baghdad area. The wounded MPs were evacuated for medical treatment.

Three Army MPs with the 101st Airborne Division were killed and seven were wounded Oct. 16 in Karbala during a firefight with insurgents near a mosque, CENTCOM also reported. Two Iraqi security personnel were killed and five were wounded at the Karbala clash, which involved exchanges of small-arms gunfire and the launching of rocket-propelled grenades.

Some of those hurt in the Karbala fight were taken to the 28th Combat Support Hospital for additional medical treatment, the CENTCOM release noted.

The Karbala firefight erupted, according to CENTCOM, as Iraqi and coalition security personnel were investigating reports that armed persons were assembling on a roadway near the mosque after curfew.

All soldiers' names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

    Both incidents are under investigation.
