Enjoy the Daily Grind -- Starbucks Joins AAFES

Customers at selected Army and Air Force Exchange Service locations will soon be waking up and smelling a different kind of coffee -- Starbucks.

A recent contract allows AAFES to offer this best-selling beverage, with the first openings planned later this year at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., Fort Gordon, Ga., and Fort Lewis, Wash.

Starbucks restaurants are planned at each of these locations. Menu items will include Starbucks coffee and espresso drinks, whole-bean or ground coffees, European-styled pastries and hot and iced teas.

"Starbucks is enjoying incredible popularity and we wanted to bring these beverages right to where our military customers live and work," said Richard Sheff, vice president of the AAFES Food and Theater group. "We hope to add additional locations soon because, as Starbucks fans will tell you, this is one daily grind you can really enjoy." (AAFES release)

Clinton Names Rudy F. de Leon Undersecretary of Defense

WASHINGTON -- President Clinton announced his intent to nominate Rudy F. de Leon to be the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.

De Leon, of Los Angeles, is serving as undersecretary of the Air Force. Before that he was special assistant to Secretary of Defense Les Aspin.

Before coming to the Pentagon with Secretary Aspin, he was a professional staff member on the House Armed Services Committee. He holds a bachelor's degree from Loyola University at Los Angeles, and has completed the Executive Program in National and International Security at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

In his new role, de Leon would be the lead staff person for the secretary of defense on all matters related to DoD military and civilian personnel and readiness. This includes compensation, equal employment opportunity, benefits and force structure. (White House release)

MIA Remains Identified

WASHINGTON -- Three Marine Corps officers and two Air Force aviators previously unaccounted for from Southeast Asia have been identified and are being returned to their families for burial.

The Marines have been identified as Lt. Col. Lewis H. Abrams of Montclair, N.J., Maj. Robert E. Holdeman of Winchester, Ind., and Capt. John N. Flanigan of Winter Haven, Fla. At the request of their families, the names of Air Force fliers were withheld.

With the return and identification of these five, there are 2,118 Americans' remains still unaccounted for from the Vietnam War. (DoD release)
