Sixth-grader Meghan Argo recently took the news of winning the Armed Services YMCA Art Contest 2002 with squeals of delight. Last year at about the same time, she was the one who answered a similar call to learn two of her sisters had taken first- and second-place prizes.
Meghan, daughter of Navy Cmdr. Michael and Margaret Argo of Stuttgart, Germany, entered a pen-and-watercolor portrait of her family to win the first-place Navy title and a $500 U.S. Savings Bond. Three other sisters entered this year's art contest and made the finals. Maureen Argo was last year's Navy winner.
Winners in each service and the National Guard have their artwork published on a poster promoting Military Family Week in November. Meghan's portrait was chosen over all the other service winners to take the prime position on the poster. The insurance company GEICO, a contest sponsor, underwrites poster publication.
All first-place service winners receive $500 bonds. Second- place entries receive a $100 bond. To honor government civilians' support to the military, an honorary award of a $100 bond is given to the child of a Defense Department or Coast Guard civilian employee.
All the winning artwork appears on the Armed Services YMCA Web site, www.asymca.org/art_contest.htm. The art contest winners page also lists the winners of honorable mention certificates.
