    BAGHDAD, IRAQ

    Story by Capt. Jennifer Hunnicutt

    Allied Joint Force Command Naples

BAGHDAD - Iraqi army Maj. Gen. Zeyad Mahmood, Iraqi War College staff commandant, recently made his first visit to the U.S. Army War College, in Carlisle, Pa., as part of the “out of country” cross-cultural training program.

Out-of-country visits help Iraqi military achieve their goal of building enduring relationships using a cross-cultural exchange of experiences and ideas.

NTM-I facilitated the trip that sent Maj. Gen. Zeyad to the Army War College, where he was able to share his own military experiences with his U.S. counterparts and spent valuable time with Army War College faculty.

While at the Army War College, Maj. Gen. Zeyad spoke to the faculty and students about his experiences in Iraq. He was also able to spend time listening to the faculty discuss education management systems and look at ways of importing the Army War College’s success stories into the Iraqi War College system.

One example that inspired Zeyad during the trip was what he learned at the Army War College’s library. “This is the beating heart of education,” he said. “This is where the knowledge is stored, where people are learning – how can we get the American books and publications to the Baghdad War College, translate it into Arabic and expand the Iraqi’s vision of the world? That is one thing I would like to work on,” he said.

The Iraqi War College, re-established in 2009, plays a key role in Iraqi security by providing operational and strategic level military education for eligible officers destined for promotion to senior level appointments in the Iraqi Armed Forces and Ministries.

Zeyad said his visit to the Army War College was a great success and the two colleges can now further develop interfaculty relations.
