The FBI handed over Pentagon crash site management to the Army Military District of Washington at 7 a.m. today.
The transfer of responsibility marks the end of the FBI's crime scene investigation following the Sept. 11 terrorist attack against the Pentagon. MDW will oversee ongoing security operations around the damaged area of the building. FBI investigators will move their operations to the Pentagon's north parking lot and continue to sift through debris for more evidence.
"We've been overwhelmed by the support provided by the service members, firefighters, police and relief organizations that have worked with us over the last two weeks," said Van A. Harp, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office. "Our job would have been more difficult without the selfless service of these brave men and women."
About 10,000 tons of debris have been removed to date during rescue and recovery efforts at the Pentagon. In addition, more than 1,500 men and women assigned to MDW have provided recovery and security assistance.
"This tragedy has changed all of our lives forever," said Maj. Gen. James T. Jackson, military district commander. "I'm extremely proud of the way our military and civilian team members have worked together under such trying circumstances."
