To celebrate Independence Day, soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and the members of the Iraqi air force came together for an Independence Day 5K Run, Soap Box Derby, Fire Muster and a Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville themed party.

The various events were hosted by the Rising Four, 5-6 and Top Three Clubs, and the FOB Warrior Fire Department.

Leadership of the service members encouraged their troops to participate in the Fourth of July events to build teamwork.

“Our platoon is together throughout the day but sometimes all it takes is doing something different to build better team cohesion,” said Sgt. 1st Class Lancy Robinson a platoon sergeant with 6th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division and a Tennessee native who brought out his platoon of soldiers to participate in the Fire Muster.

His soldiers agreed that events like this make the holidays easier.

“We can’t be home with our families so we’re out here celebrating with our brothers,” said one soldier.

For firefighters on FOB Warrior Fourth of July is not only about building teamwork but also about remembrance.

Senior Airmen Douglas Shick, a firefighter with the North Carolina Air National Guard who deployed with the 506th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron, Crash-Fire-Rescue participated in all of the Fourth of July events on FOB Warrior and said he and his fellow firefighters enjoyed the celebration.

“Today is a day of celebration and a day of remembrance for the firefighters,” said Senior Airmen Shick, whose Soap Box Derby team honored fallen firefighters by painting 343, the number of fallen firefighters during 9/11, on the back of their car.

“We want to have fun and at the same time honor those before us,” he said.
