ANA commandos, USSOF kill insurgents in Badghis
BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army commandos from the 4th Commando Kandak, assisted by U. S. Special Operations Forces, killed an unknown number of insurgents in the early morning hours of June 7 in Badghis province.
The Afghan-led force was conducting a presence patrol near the Darreh-I-Bum village, Qades district, Badghis province when they were attacked by an unknown number of insurgents.
The large group of insurgents engaged the combined force at about 3 a.m. using small-arms and machine gun fire from the bazaar area of Darreh-I-Bum village. During this engagement, the insurgents continued to launch undisciplined fire at the combined force and into the surrounding community endangering local residents. The partnered force returned fire killing several insurgents.
The insurgents engaged the partnered force again at about 10 a.m. in an open field just north of the bazaar using mortar, rocket and machine gun fire. The ANA commandos and USSOF returned fire and called in coalition air support to drop several precision guided munitions on the enemy’s firing positions, killing an unknown number of insurgents. No civilian casualties or damage to property was reported.
Local government leaders provided advice and support to the combined force throughout the engagement. ANA and USSOF patrol leaders met with local leaders following the attack to discuss future security assistance to the community.
“The Commandos and USSOF, with the support of Afghanistan continue to provide protection to local communities in the Badghis province,” said Capt. Jamie Hanselman, a Special Operations Task Force-West spokesperson. “Eliminating insurgent influence in the area is a priority of our combined organization.”
