KABUL, Afghanistan – Brig. Gen. Frank Leidenberger transferred command of ISAF’s Regional Command North to Major General Hans-Werner Fritz in a ceremony at Mazar-e Sharif today.

Speaking at the ceremony, the commander of the ISAF Joint Command, Lt. Gen. David Rodriguez thanked General Leidenberger for his leadership and direction.

Commenting on progress during recent operations, Rodriguez said, “Afghans see their forces take freedom of movement from the Taliban. They see their forces bring the security that allows development and stability. With Afghans leading these operations. . .there is good reason for the people to begin to trust and have confidence in their government.

Rodriguez welcomed Fritz to his new command. “You will not find a better, more courageous formation to lead anywhere. Build on these partnerships General Leidenberger has put into place.”

“I am looking forward to this very challenging assignment,” said Fritz. “General Leidenberger has paved the way for a successful continuation of our commitment here in northern Afghanistan. Together with our allies and afghan friends, I am very certain that we will achieve our goals concerning security and stabilization for the afghan people.”

RC (N) is a team of 40,000 servicemembers from Afghanistan and 19 other nations. Germany, Hungary, Norway, and Sweden lead five provincial reconstruction teams bringing governance, development and security to more than third of Afghanistan’s population.
