Thousands of service members from 19 countries are participating in Eager Lion, an annual multinational exercise.

Taking place at various locations around Jordan, the exercise began June 9 and runs through June 20.

“This exercise is designed to encounter national security challenges such as counterinsurgency, border security, close-air support and integration of the whole of government,” said Maj. Gen. Awni al Adwan, chairman of joint task force with the Jordanian army.

Jordan is hosting more than 8,000 Eager Lion participants, who will be conducting operations by land, air and sea. The exercise includes events such as visit, board, search and seizure techniques and live-fire demonstrations.

“All of this combined training, led by the Jordanian armed forces, will come together over the next two weeks, strengthening the partnership between 19 countries and increasing the ability of participating nations to operate together during any contingency,” said Army Maj. Gen. Robert G. Catalanotti, U.S. Central Command’s director of exercises and training.

About 5,000 U.S. service members from all services are participating in this year’s exercise, along with Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps aircraft and ships, Centcom officials said.
