FORT LEE, Va. — The Fort Lee Directorate of Public Works will execute a demolition effort to include 13 buildings across the installation with a tentative completion date of December 2025.
“Demolition is a natural part of facility management,” said Fort Lee Community Planner Fritz Brandt. “Demolition is used to remove older buildings that do not meet mission and/or standards or have deteriorated beyond cost effective repair/renovation.”
Ten of the 13 buildings are World War II wood, built around 1941, Brandt said.
“Programmatic demolition efforts—those not directly associated with a new construction project—are centrally funded by Installation Management Command (Facility Reduction Program),” Brandt said. “This is the first demo funding we have received in about 10 years. After this current effort, there will be 17 buildings left on our demo list, and they will be demo’d subject to available funding.”
These buildings and surrounding areas will be off limits to personnel and vehicles. All vehicles should be removed from fenced areas around the buildings. Any training in these areas will need to be temporarily relocated. Parking is not allowed within 12 feet of the fence line.
“People should know to stay away,” Brandt said. “Stay away. Stay away. The demolition sites are inherently dangerous. These areas are dangerous due to active demolition, unstable structures, heavy equipment operation, possible exposure to asbestos/lead and potential debris. Entering these zones puts yourself and others at serious risk of injury or worse. Additionally, the buildings may be structurally unsound in their existing condition or as part of the demo process.”
According to DPW, the demolition also includes a Dining Facility built in 1951 (the remaining wing of a barracks that saw the barracks portion demolished ~2009) and two barracks built in 1978.
After this demolition effort, the demolition sites will be available for future development, though there are no specific plans currently, Brandt said.
