ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam— The 36th Civil Engineer Squadron held a memorial ruck to honor the legacy of the late Senior Master Sgt. Daniel Wissmann on Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, June 23, 2025.
Before his death, Wissmann planned to have the 36th CES carry bags of dog food during a five-mile ruck uphill from Tarague Beach and back down with the intention to donate the food upon completing the event.
“He was demanding but caring, knowing when to push and when to support,” Master Sgt. Jackson, the 36th CES facilities systems superintendent and friend of Wissmann, noted, reflecting on Wissmann’s leadership. “Without each other, our efforts mean nothing. That camaraderie is what sustains us, especially in difficult times.”
Jackson continued planning the event to replicate Wissmann’s original plan from the previous year.
"This is just a great opportunity to honor Dan's service, his commitment to the Air Force, and his commitment to his friends," said Chief Master Sgt. Austin Winegardner, 36th CES senior enlisted leader.
Each participant was urged to pack their backpacks with large bags of dog food to give to GAIN Animal Shelter. After completing the event, participants donated 2,000 pounds of food.
Despite some participants not knowing Wissmann personally, service members from across the island showed up to participate in the ruck.
“Honoring the fallen is everything,” Jackson said. “It reminds us why we serve and reinforces the bonds that keep us together.”
The 36th CES plans to continue to hold memorial rucks to honor Senior Master Sgt. Wissmann in the future.
