BARNES AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Massachusetts - For the first time, 18 members of the 104th Fighter Wing Medical Group participated in a Tactical Combat Casualty Care course June 11 at Barnes Air National Guard Base.

The course, commonly known as TCCC, is now offered locally after several members of the Medical Group completed instructor certification. Previously, airmen had to travel to external organizations such as Hartford HealthCare or the Army National Guard to receive the training.

The five-day, 40-hour course combines classroom instruction with hands-on assessments and culminates in a capstone event. That final exercise evaluates participants in a dynamic, scenario-based environment that challenges them to apply everything they have learned.

“This course includes extensive academics and practical assessments,” said Chief Master Sgt. Timothy Mutti, senior enlisted leader for the Medical Group. “The capstone allows members to integrate and execute their skills under pressure.”

Mutti also supported the event alongside Security Forces, airfield operations and airport management personnel, who coordinated logistics across base departments.

Capt. Stephanie Dalton, a TCCC instructor with the 104th Medical Group, led the training, administering both written exams and the final exercise.

“They were only told that they were a new medical unit tasked with surveying a site for a potential Role 2 facility — a medical installation with surgical capability,” Dalton said.

The TCCC course is open to all airmen, though some job specialties are given enrollment priority. There are no prerequisites to attend.

“TCCC is an invaluable course,” Dalton said. “The information and skills are relevant and necessary. Many participants said it was one of the best trainings they’ve ever received.”
