FORWARD OPERATING SITE TORUN, Poland – Col. Samuel Nirenberg assumed command of the Division Artillery Brigade, 1st Armored Division from Col. Jayson Morgan during a change of command ceremony June 18, 2025, at Forward Operating Site Torun, Poland.
Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, the commanding general of the 1st Armored Division, presided over the ceremony and presented Morgan with the Legion of Merit in recognition of his service as the brigade commander.
Taylor praised the outgoing commander's leadership and the brigade's achievements during Morgan's tenure, highlighting their transformation into an eight-battalion formation.
"You became the first DIVARTY in the Army to receive full operational control of all three of the division's artillery battalions and our divisional air defense battalion, ultimately growing to the eight-battalion formation that you are today with a massive span of control," Taylor said.
Taylor emphasized the brigade's operational excellence, particularly their performance during recent exercises and their targeting capabilities.
"You accomplished this task by developing the most disciplined and efficient targeting process that I have ever seen," Taylor said, referring to the unit's performance during the Warfighter Exercise.
"For me, this is more than a professional milestone – it's a return to a team, a division, and a mission I deeply believe in," said Nirenberg, who previously served in the 1st Armored Division. "I first served in the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss nearly a decade ago, and when I left in 2017, I had a gut feeling I wasn't finished with Old Ironsides."
Nirenberg brings recent experience to the role, having commanded the 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment in Torun three years ago.
"I got to see firsthand the value of our mission, the importance of our presence alongside our NATO Allies, and the power of a forward posture backed by disciplined, lethal, and cohesive formations," Nirenberg said.
Morgan, who commanded the brigade for two years, reflected on the unit's extensive training and operational tempo during his tenure.
"The reality is that the DIVARTY over the past two years has done so much, it is hard to cover everything," Morgan said. "Whether that's numerous NTC rotations, Warfighter, deployments, or days and nights out training in Dona Ana Training Complex, New Mexico. I think we squeezed about 5 years' worth of training into two."
The outgoing commander emphasized the importance of teamwork and unity within the formation, which consists of eight battalions with diverse capabilities supporting the Iron Division's mission.
"Standing alone, each of us can achieve remarkable things. But standing together, supporting each other, pushing each other to new heights. That's when we become truly unstoppable," Morgan said. "The strength of any team lies in its unity of purpose."
Taylor acknowledged Morgan's impact on the organization and wished him well in his next assignment as Chief of Staff of the Fire Center at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
"The potential of any leader is best defined by the impact they have and the investment they make on those that they lead. By that standard, Jason Morgan's two years of command have been nothing short of a tremendous success," Taylor said.
Nirenberg outlined his commitment to the Soldiers under his command and to strengthening partnerships with NATO allies.
"My commitment to you is simple: I will lead with purpose, with humility, and with the belief that our strength lies in our people," he said. "We will train hard, we will take care of one another, and we will continue to set the standard for fires formations across the globe."
The ceremony included a performance by the 1st Armored Division Band and traditional military honors, including the passing of the unit colors from the outgoing to the incoming commander.
