SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Georgia Air National Guard’s 165th Airlift Wing welcomed nearly 35 civilian employer representatives June 11 for an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) “Boss Lift” event.
The ESGR Boss Lift aims to strengthen the bond between employers and their employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve by offering them a flight on a military aircraft and the chance to learn more about the mission of the Air National Guard.
“This event forges a vital partnership between the National Guard and civilian employers,” said Col. Sheldon Wilson, commander of the 165th Airlift Wing. “This understanding translates directly into the support our citizen-Airmen need to answer the call of duty, making it essential to our mission readiness.”
The day began with a mission briefing highlighting the wing’s long-standing history and dual role supporting both state and federal missions. Employers gained insight into how Air National Guardsmen balance the unique responsibility of serving their country and local communities, while also working full-time civilian careers.
Participants then took a 60-minute flight aboard a C-130J Super Hercules, flying over coastal Georgia including the Tybee Island Pier. During the flight, they learned about the aircraft’s capabilities, advanced technology, and its role in global airlift operations.
“By offering immersive experiences like a Boss Lift flight, employers gain a firsthand connection to the military world, creating an understanding of the valuable skills, rigorous training, and unwavering dedication that Guard and Reserve members bring to their civilian jobs,” said 1st Lt. Faith Brown, executive officer of the 165th Airlift Wing.
Bill Murphy, a representative of Bulloch County Emergency Management Services, said he was impressed by the Air National Guard mission. “Being able to see what they do, the commitment that they have, and their service to their country is just honorable,” Murphy said.
After the flight, employers were served lunch by the ESGR committee and had additional opportunities to learn about the wing’s mission and the critical role employer support plays in enabling service members to serve, respond to emergencies, and deploy globally.
The 165th Airlift Wing is composed of 1,300 Airmen, 70% of whom are traditional Guardsmen who live, work, coach and volunteer in the local community. Events like the ESGR Boss Lift foster public support for these citizen-Airmen, empowering them to selflessly answer the call to serve.
