FRANCIS S. GABRESKI AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, WESTHAMPTON BEACH, N.Y. — New York Air National Guard Senior Master Sgt. Timothy Daniel Malloy, a Riverhead resident, was promoted to chief master sergeant, the highest enlisted rank in the Air Force, during a ceremony on June 6 at the 106th Rescue Wing firehouse at Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base.
Lt. Col. Kevin Lawhon, interim commander of the 106th Communications Squadron and presiding official at the ceremony, praised Malloy’s service and leadership.
“Senior Master Sgt. Malloy has continuously astounded us with his leadership quality and this promotion is well overdue,” Lawhon said.
Malloy began his Air Force career in August 1999. He has served at bases in Texas, Washington, Mississippi, Alabama, Colorado, Spain, and South Korea. He has deployed to Afghanistan, Djibouti, Iraq, Somalia, and Kenya. His roles have included technical and leadership positions in communications.
Since 2006, Malloy has been part of the 106th Rescue Wing, where he now serves as the senior enlisted leader of the 106th Communications Squadron.
Malloy’s awards include the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.
Malloy’s father, retired Chief Master Sgt. Timothy Patrick Malloy, was present for the ceremony, and served as the noncommissioned officer in charge of the pararescue jumpers at the 106th Rescue Wing from 1976 to 2004.
“You are proof that out of adversity can come great things, and as a father I couldn’t be prouder of you and what you’ve accomplished,” Malloy’s father said.
In his remarks, the newly promoted Malloy thanked wing leadership, his wife, fellow Airmen, and friends.
"I am honored to be able to serve the 106th Rescue Wing in this role and I am dedicated to the future of our Airmen and our mission," Malloy said.
Malloy also addressed the enlisted members of his squadron, expressing gratitude for their dedication in overcoming challenges and emphasizing his commitment to supporting their growth and success.
“I promise you that I will work so that when we tally the ups and downs we share together, you’ll have a net positive experience for your contributions here,” Malloy said. “My directive to you will not change. It’s to continue to move forward, innovate, create solutions, and then execute them. I will support you.”
According to Air Force Instruction 36-2502, Enlisted Airman Promotion and Demotion Programs, chief master sergeant is the pinnacle of the Air Force enlisted ranks, with only about 1 percent of the enlisted force selected each year.
The 106th Rescue Wing, based at F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, New York, operates and maintains the HC-130J Combat King II search and rescue aircraft, and the HH-60W Jolly Green II search and rescue helicopter. The 106th Rescue Wing is home to a special warfare squadron with pararescuemen and combat rescue officers, specializing in rescue and recovery, and deploys for domestic and overseas operations.
