The Military Health System Communications and Public Affairs Division announced on June 4, 2025, the winner of the 2024 Kevin M. Dwyer Memorial Media Relations Awards.

Riley Eversull, the public affairs officer for Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, is the recipient of the award for her outstanding media relations coverage of numerous events involving the hospital, a level 3 trauma center since 2018 providing trauma care to local communities.

“This is an incredible honor and one that could not have been achieved without my dynamic supportive team and leadership here at the Naval Medical Center at Camp Lejeune,” said Eversull, when notified of her award.

“Riley is vital to our team and our communications program, who helps us represent NMC Camp Lejeune. This is so amazing to see her hard work recognized at such a high level,” stated U.S. Navy Capt. Anja Dabelic, the director of the Naval Medical Center at Camp Lejeune.

Dawne Nickerson, the public affairs officer for the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, received an honorable mention award for her ability to tell the story of the mission and focus of AFMES in supporting the MHS and the Department of Defense. AFMES provides comprehensive forensic investigative services to DOD and the entire U.S. federal government, including forensic pathology, DNA identifications, forensic toxicology, and medical mortality surveillance.

The award is named after Kevin Dwyer, who served as the chief of media relations for the MHS and the Defense Health Agency from 2013 until April 2020 when he unexpectedly passed away. This award was created in his honor to recognize exceptional public affairs officers throughout the MHS who focus on the art of media relations to communicate accurate and timely information to a variety of audiences.

“Working with local and national media plays an important role in helping tell the story of the Military Health System,” said Ken Fidler, chief of plans and operations for the MHS Communications and Public Affairs Division. “It is important to recognize this great work.”

This award is one of several opportunities annually to recognize communications and public affairs professionals throughout the MHS.

This is the third year this award is presented in the MHS. Previous winners were Sarah Marshall from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences at Bethesda, Maryland, and Whitney Trimble, formerly of the DHA’s Hawaii market.
