NORFOLK, Va. (June 6, 2025) – Surface Line Week 2025 concluded with resounding success, showcasing the dedication, skill, and camaraderie of Sailors across the surface force, June 6.

More than 22 commands and hundreds of Sailors from across the Surface Force Atlantic (SURFLANT) enterprise competed in 24 events throughout the week.

Surface Combat Systems Training Command Hampton Roads was recognized as the winner in the Small Command category, while USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) earned top honors in the Largest Command category. USS Porter (DDG 78) distinguished itself by securing victory in the Medium Command category and being named the Overall Surface Line Week Champion, exemplifying the Surface Force’s unwavering commitment to excellence across a diverse range of missions.

“Once again, the Sailors of USS Porter have demonstrated that excellence transcends all boundaries—both in their professional duties and athletic achievements,” said Cmdr. Cameron Burnette, commanding officer of USS Porter.

This year's Surface Line Week, themed “Celebrating Surface Warfare Excellence: 250 Years Strong,” emphasized readiness, resilience, and the importance of community engagement. Rear Adm. Joseph Cahill, commander of Naval Surface Force Atlantic, addressed the Sailors, highlighting the critical role the Surface Force plays in projecting American power and protecting national interests.

“Surface Line Week 2025 has been a tremendous success, showcasing the very best of our Surface Force. Thank you to all the participants, partners, and the Hampton Roads community for their unwavering support,” said Rear Adm. Cahill. “As we celebrate 250 years of naval history, we are reminded of the vital role our Sailors play in protecting our nation and promoting peace around the world. We look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence in the years to come.”

The week's competitions rigorously tested Sailors in critical areas such as seamanship, damage control, navigation, and team-building – skills essential for operating technologically advanced ships in challenging environments worldwide. One demanding event featured a complex damage control exercise simulating a realistic casualty, underscoring the importance of a self-sufficient and adaptable force. Sailors’ performance under pressure reflected their rigorous training and unwavering commitment to mission excellence.

In addition to the tactical competitions, Sailors participated in team-building activities such as tug-of-war and the cardboard regatta, further strengthening the esprit de corps fundamental to the Surface Force’s success. The week culminated in a closing ceremony and picnic, bringing together Sailors from across commands to celebrate their shared commitment to maritime excellence.

Surface Line Week is an annual competition for all subordinate SURFLANT commands designed to enhance the readiness and proficiency of the Surface Force Atlantic by fostering teamwork, recognizing excellence, and strengthening ties with the Hampton Roads community through a series of challenging and engaging events.

Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic (COMNAVSURFLANT) mans, trains, and equips assigned surface forces and shore activities, ensuring a capable force for conducting prompt and sustained operations in support of United States national interests. The SURFLANT force is composed of 77 ships and 31 shore commands.
