He replaced Command Sgt. Maj. Marc Maynard
Brig. Gen. Isabel Smith, the commanding general of the 53rd Troop Command, praised Maynard's 39-year military career, highlighting his "unwavering dedication, selfless service, and exceptional leadership."
She noted his crucial role as a trusted advisor to three commanding generals over the past three years.
"That speaks volumes about his consistency, his adaptability, and the deep respect that he commands," Smith said, of Maynard.
She praised Giamberdino for his "distinguished record of service and a wealth of experience."
"We are confident that you will bring your expertise, your energy, and your dedication to the 53rd Troop Command," Smith said.
His prior roles include the 153rd Troop Command, 501st Ordnance Battalion, and the 204th Engineer Battalion.
He deployed to Balad, Iraq, from 2003-2005 and has been activated for numerous New York State civil support operations, including September 11, 2001, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Action Badge, and the Engineer "de Fleury" Medal.
In his remarks, Giamberdino thanked Smith for her trust and acknowledged the vital support and sacrifices made by his family as
they supported his career.
He also paid tribute to Maynard, describing him as a "guidepost, a mentor and a friend."
Giamberdino shared a valuable leadership lesson he learned from Maynard.
He recalled a moment when Maynard asked him, "What did you learn from this?" after a high-stress mission.
"That simple question to me taught me that leadership is about developing people, not punishing mistakes, but guiding growth," Giamberdino said. "That's a lesson that I have carried with me ever since, and will carry forward into this new role."
Looking ahead, Giamberdino outlined his priorities.
"My priorities are clear, and to our junior leaders, reinforce standards and accountability, and build a climate where every soldier is valued and respected."
Under Maynard's leadership, the 53rd consistently exceeded its troop strength goals, directly contributing to the New York Army National Guard's standing as "number one in the nation in strength maintenance."
Smith emphasized Maynard's commitment to soldier readiness.
"He implemented new policies that demonstrated enhanced soldier readiness and professionalism. He didn't just talk about developing soldiers. He actively mentored our senior NCOs, preparing them to lead our units through demanding missions," she said.
His tenure included guiding the command through the mobilization and deployment of 13 units, totaling over 1,700 soldiers, for global contingency operations and numerous civil support missions.
These missions included critical responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and the deployment of more than 400 soldiers to Washington, D.C., for the 60th presidential inauguration.
Smith said to Maynard, "I personally want to thank you for our partnership, our friendship, and dedication to our number one priority - our soldiers. Thank you for making the difference and making a lasting impact in the 53rd Troop Command and the New York Army National Guard."
Maynard, in his farewell remarks, reflected on the ceremony's historical significance.
"Ceremonial events and rituals like this change of responsibility ceremony provide a framework of connection of the present to the past," he said. "These events link us with our heritage."
He expressed pride in his service as the 53rd Troop Command’s Command Sergeant Major, calling it "the highlight of my career."
He also extended deep appreciation to his wife, Sherry, for her "loving support," and attributed his success to his faith.
Maynard was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and a gift recognizing his "exceptional leadership" and "unwavering dedication."
