JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii — Navy Region Hawaii and Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam conducted a wreath-laying ceremony at the USS Arizona Memorial to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Midway June 6, 2025.
Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Commanding Officer Capt. Samuel White and Navy Region Hawaii Acting Command Master Chief Nicole Sailor, along with members from the University of Hawaii Naval ROTC, laid a wreath in honor one of the most critical battles of World War II.
“In many estimations, the Battle of Midway was the United States Navy’s finest hour,” said Jim Neuman, Navy Region Hawaii historian. “This year’s commemoration is especially poignant as it coincides with both the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II and the U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday.”
The battle took place June 4-7, 1942. After four intense days of fighting, the resulting outcome saw the U.S. Navy heavily cripple the Japanese Navy fighting force. Many historians consider the battle as the decisive turning point in the Pacific war, which ended Japan's naval superiority and bolstered momentum to the U.S. military’s war effort.
Though it was considered a major victory for the United States, it came at great cost.
“We present this wreath for the Sailors and Marines who laid the foundation for our Navy’s greatness,” said White. “Their courage, sacrifice, heroism and teamwork directly turned the tide in the pivotal battle for the Pacific during World War II, and it’s these traits that today’s service members continue to emulate.”
