IQUITOS, Peru – U.S. and Canadian military medics partnered with the Peruvian Armed Forces in Iquitos, Peru, the week of June 2, 2025, to kick off a Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) knowledge exchange.
The two-week exchange is designed to strengthen regional medical partnerships through joint training and shared expertise. Participants from all three nations took part in hands-on demonstrations, skill-sharing sessions and roundtable discussions to compare medical protocols and adapt best practices to one another’s operational environments.
“We come from different systems, but our shared goal is preserving life,” said Royal Canadian Air Force Cpl. Sarah Tobin. “The Peruvian medics showed us how they innovate with what they have. Their experience operating in the Amazon and jungle environment is invaluable. In turn, we shared how we apply our TCCC standards and best practices.”
The TCCC knowledge exchange focused on delivering emergency care in resource-limited environments—a challenge familiar to all participating nations. Peruvian medics shared how they adapt techniques in austere conditions, while U.S. and Canadian teams introduced standardization practices and trauma protocols used within their respective services.
“This was more than a training; it was a mutual learning opportunity,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Antonio Zinck. “We weren’t just teaching TCCC principles—we were adapting them to each other’s environments and constraints. Whether you’re in the jungle, mountains or desert, the need to stabilize and evacuate a casualty quickly is universal.
"What stood out most was the energy and motivation the Peruvian medics brought," added Zinck. "They were eager to learn, quick to collaborate and fully committed to sharpening their skills.”
The event also included advanced TCCC scenarios and joint exercises. Participants emphasized the importance of continued cooperation to build shared readiness and strengthen medical capabilities across the region in support of both security and humanitarian response efforts.
The exchange is part of AMISTAD 2025, a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored medical engagement series focused on building regional partnerships through collaborative training and humanitarian support.
Conducted annually across Latin America, AMISTAD brings together military medical professionals from partner nations to strengthen interoperability, improve trauma response capabilities and promote shared readiness in complex environments.
