PENSACOLA, Fla. – Information Warfare Training Command Corry Station has launched a course designed to sharpen the skills of electromagnetic warfare Sailors.
The Surface Electromagnetic Warfare Operations Basic Course’s primary objective is producing more knowledgeable SLQ-32(V)6 operators among the cryptologic technician (technical) rate. SLQ-32(V)6 is part of an enhanced electronic warfare system used by Navy ships.
With completion of this seven-week course, the Navy will now receive more proficiently trained Sailors able to operate a ship’s SLQ-32(V)6 system and perform their duties as an electromagnetic warfare operator, officials said.
Chief Petty Officer Tyler Gonzalez, a CTT Sailor and IWTC Corry Station training manager, oversaw the two-year project and SEWO Basic pilot course, which concluded last November. He worked with Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division to develop, test and implement all course curriculum.
“This course was established to improve fleet knowledge among EW operators of the SLQ-32(V)6 system and is intended to provide Sailors with more Soft Kill Coordination System familiarity,” Gonzalez said. “SKCS integrates EW tactics and countermeasures into combat systems to better defend the ship. With this system being relatively new to the Navy, our goal is to provide Sailors with the baseline fundamentals of SKCS that they can further expand upon when they get to the fleet.”
The pilot was taught by Claylan Helms and Petty Officer 1st Class Carson Luck, also a CTT Sailor.
“Seeing the improvements made to the electromagnetic warfare equipment used to defend the Navy and allied forces over the last 30-plus years puts my mind at ease regarding the U.S. Navy’s prowess on the international stage,” said Helms, a CTT schoolhouse instructor since 2022. “Being able to discuss with students how far we have come and where we are going in the future will hopefully provide insight to help them understand how critical their job is to a successful mission. The knowledge they gain on the cutting-edge capabilities can provide the advantage in battle.”
Through the SEWO Basic Course, students learn the roles and responsibilities they will assume onboard a ship.
“The toughest part of the course is the extensive amount of information that is covered, but once you get used to it, it is not hard to grasp,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class John Cotton, a student and CTT Sailor from Russellville, Arkansas. “It is rewarding to know that we’re the first Sailors to go through this course and that we’re bringing training to the fleet that others haven’t had a chance to experience.”
The first official SEWO Basic class began in February at IWTC Corry Station.
After completing the course, students head off to ship assignments or SLQ-32(V)6 Maintenance School. SEWO Basic is expected to replace the AN/SLQ-32 (V) Shipboard Operations Course within the next few years.
IWTC Corry Station is part of the Center for Information Warfare Training. With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT provides instruction for over 26,000 students every year, delivering information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. It also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic, information systems and electronics technicians; intelligence specialists and officers in the information warfare community.
