BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery will host a deeply meaningful promotion ceremony today, as First Lieutenant Chloe K. Hoag is elevated to the rank of Captain. This location holds special significance for Chloe, as it is the final resting place of her grandparents, including her grandfather who served in the Korean War. The ceremony symbolizes not only her professional advancement but also a heartfelt tribute to her family's legacy of service.
Promotion ceremonies in the military are significant events that recognize the achievements and dedication of service members while marking their transition to greater responsibilities. For Chloe, this ceremony is particularly poignant as it honors her family's history and her personal journey.
Chloe’s journey to becoming an officer in the U.S. Army began unexpectedly during her time at the University of Delaware. Encouraged by a friend, she joined the Blue Hen Battalion ROTC program, where she discovered her passion for military service. Her path led her to West Chester University of PA, where she earned her master's degree and was commissioned as an Air Defense Artillery officer.
Reflecting on her time as the Executive Officer for Central Jersey Recruiting Company, Chloe acknowledges the unique challenges and rewards of recruiting duty. Unlike the cyclical nature of missions in Air Defense units, recruiting demands constant engagement and support for future soldiers. Her role has allowed her to connect with recruits, share her experiences, and contribute to their excitement about their Army careers.
The promotion to Captain holds profound personal and professional significance for Chloe. Inspired by her former commander, Capt. Lindy Clark, she strives to embody the Army values and provide mentorship and support to her soldiers.
"To me, the title of Captain represents a further responsibility to guide and support Soldiers. I will continue to strive every day to be the leader they deserve," Chloe shares.
Choosing BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery for her promotion ceremony was a deeply personal decision.
"It means the world to me that my grandparents will be present in some way at my promotion ceremony," Chloe explains. Her grandfather's service in the Korean War and his unconditional love and support have profoundly influenced her life and career.
During the ceremony, Chloe anticipates feeling a mix of emotions, knowing her grandparents are "with" her in spirit.
"I wouldn’t say I am religious, but I am spiritual in the idea that the impact someone makes on your life stays with the ones they have touched forever," she reflects.
“Capt. Hoag's dedication to her soldiers and her commitment to excellence are truly commendable,” said Mid-Atlantic Recruiting Battalion Commander, Lt. Col Joe Gainey. “Her promotion is a testament to her hard work and leadership.”
Lt. Col Gainey's words highlight the recognition of Chloe's dedication and the significance of her promotion.
“Chloe's journey and her choice of ceremony location highlight the deep connections we form in the Army,” said Central Jersey Recruiting Company Commander, Capt. Christopher Myrtil. “Her leadership style, rooted in compassion and respect, sets a powerful example for all of us.”
Capt. Myrtil emphasizes the importance of Chloe's leadership style and the meaningful choice of ceremony location.
“Capt. Hoag's promotion is not just a milestone in her career but a celebration of her family's legacy of service,” said Mid-Atlantic Recruiting Battalion Command Sergeant Major Isaiah Hawkins. “Her unwavering dedication to her soldiers and her mission is inspiring.”
Command Sgt. Maj. Hawkins underscores the broader significance of Chloe's promotion and her dedication to her mission.
Chloe's leadership style is characterized by compassion, emotional intelligence, and mutual trust and respect. She emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting the diverse backgrounds of her soldiers, fostering a culture of mutual trust and high morale.
Looking back, one of her proudest moments in uniform was promoting a soldier from private first class to corporal in her first unit.
"Seeing a young Soldier learn their craft and then thrive as a junior leader is the most rewarding experience as a leader in the Army," Chloe recalls.
As she steps into her new role as Captain, Chloe's goals include continuing to learn and being the leader her soldiers deserve. Balancing the demands of leadership with personal growth and well-being has been a journey, supported by her loved ones and the establishment of healthy boundaries.
The Central Jersey team has played a crucial role in her development, providing trust and support that has allowed her to grow as a leader. Her message to young women considering a career in the Army is one of empowerment:
"It is more than okay to be you. It is amazing. Be loud, be strong, be independent," Chloe said.
Chloe expresses deep gratitude to her wife, Katherine Rogers, for her unwavering support throughout their journey together.
"Whether I was just down in North Carolina or across the world in the desert, she has always been my rock," Chloe says.
Captain Chloe K. Hoag's promotion ceremony is not only a celebration of her achievements but also a poignant tribute to her family's legacy of service. Her story exemplifies the values of dedication, compassion, and respect that define the U.S. Army. As she steps into this new chapter, Chloe continues to inspire those around her with her unwavering commitment to her soldiers and her mission.
