Fort Sill, Okla – (June 3, 2025) — In an inspiring display of dedication, resilience, and family commitment, a mother and daughter graduated side by side from U.S. Army Basic Combat Training (BCT) at Fort Sill, marking a rare and commendable achievement on 30 May 2025.

Private Second Class Jessica Merrick, 39, and her daughter, Private Jasmain Merrick, 19, completed the intensive 10-week training program together, earning the title of U.S. Army Soldiers. Their decision to enlist was driven by a shared goal: to pursue a lifelong dream and secure a better future for their family.

Jessica shared a message of optimism. “Keep a great smile,” she said, “because the brightness of your smile can change the trajectory of your life.”

Jasmain echoed the values of grit and perseverance. “Nothing in life is free - to get what you want; you have to earn it.” she said.

The Merricks’ story resonated deeply with fellow trainees and drill sergeants alike. Known for their relentless work ethic and mutual support, they consistently exceeded expectations and fostered a spirit of camaraderie within their platoon.

“Together they stepped into a challenge and changed, not just as mother and daughter, but as warriors. Their journey is a legacy in the making.” Drill Sergeant SSG Kyle Megahan said.

Now graduates, the two Soldiers are preparing for the next phase of their Army careers. Private Jasmain Merrick, a 14U (Air Defense Artillery Recruit), will remain at Fort Sill for Advanced Individual Training (AIT), while Private Second Class Jessica Merrick, an 88M (Motor Transport Operator), will report to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Though they’ll train in different locations, their unique experience of completing BCT together is a bond they’ll carry for life.

They arrived as family, and they leave as Soldiers. Together, they’ve proven that commitment and courage know no age or generation.
