Everyday life presents challenges, and for service members and their families frequent relocations and demanding work schedules can add to the strain. Due to the nature of those demands, the Navy embraces the Ombudsman Program. It is a command-operated program developed to improve communication between a command and a Sailor’s family member.
Ombudsmen are Navy spouse volunteers appointed by the commanding officer and serve two important roles: a communication link between the commanding officer and command families, and as professionally trained information and referral specialists for those families.
Andrea Berrios, from Torrance, California, has recently been asked to fill the role as the NTAG Miami Ombudsman. As a former interior communications electrician, mother of four children and wife to Retail Specialist 1st Class Richard Berrios, she believes drawing on her own experiences for the position will help her.
“Being in the Navy opened my eyes to exactly how big the world really is,” said Andrea. “What we learn as children is nothing compared to what you learn from experiencing it firsthand. I have traveled more than I ever thought I would. It also challenged me in ways that have helped me grow as a person. I will be forever grateful. My favorite part of being a military spouse is the many places I get to see and the many people I get to meet.”
Command leadership anticipates a productive partnership with Andrea Berrios in her role as ombudsman, recognizing the importance of her contributions to maintaining effective communication and support within the command community.
“We’re thrilled to have Andrea Berrios as part of the team,” said NTAG Miami Commanding Officer Cmdr. Amanda Sciberras. “The ombudsman is an important link between command and our Sailors' families, helping support the readiness and well-being of our unit.
Andrea Berrios expressed that she saw it as a great way to give back.
“I look forward to adding to the already great command that we are a part of,” says Andrea. “I look forward to assisting families as much as I am able to.”
The Navy Family Ombudsman Program is a Navy-wide program established to improve mission readiness. A strong command Ombudsman Program, both ashore and afloat, can help ensure families have the necessary information to meet the challenges of a military lifestyle.
NTAG Miami has recruiting locations throughout South Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, with the combined mission to recruit the highest caliber Sailors to meet the needs of the fleet.
