FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. – 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) officially arrived at Libby Army Airfield on April 29, assuming aviation responsibilities in support of Joint Task Force–Southern Border (JTF-SB), reinforcing Army aviation’s enduring role in securing the southern border.
“The 1st Combat Aviation Brigade is ready. We trained hard, focusing on both flying and maintaining our aircraft,” said Col. Chad Corrigan, 1st CAB commander. “Our aggressive approach to training, flying more, flying at night, and conducting more multi-ship flights ensured we were prepared when called upon to join JTF-SB. Now, we stand ready to support Customs and Border Protection as we work together to secure the border.”
Under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, Joint Task Force–Southern Border was activated in March to synchronize Department of Defense operations along the southern border. The aviation support is just one part of a larger mission to integrate agile, all-domain support across a 2,000-mile operational footprint.
“Every movement forward is a reflection of our commitment to mission readiness and joint partnership,” said Maj. Gen. Scott M. Naumann, commanding general of both 10th Mountain Division and JTF-SB. “We are aligning capabilities and optimizing our posture to better support DHS and Border Patrol efforts.”
Tasked with surveillance, troop movement, and logistical support, the Soldiers of 1st CAB will play a critical role in day-to-day operations throughout the region. The arrival of the new team ensures mission continuity while bringing fresh momentum to the aviation element of JTF-SB.
Their presence also comes at a time of increased activity across the task force, which now includes over 8,500 personnel from across the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and supporting agencies. Units such as the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 101st Division Sustainment Brigade, and 89th Military Police Brigade are working in tandem to enhance operational support, detection, and engineering capabilities on the ground.
As new boots touch down at Libby, the mission continues without pause. With a deep bench of aviation expertise and a reputation for excellence, 1st CAB is prepared to support JTF-SB’s mission with precision, professionalism, and purpose.
