U.S. Coast Guardsmen with Port Security Unit 301 conducted a sea-to-sea live-fire training exercise at MCAS Cherry Point’s Bombing Target 9 (Brandt Island). An unmanned surface vessel towed a target to support U.S. Coast Guard personnel in conducting scenario-based training focused on boat maneuvering tactics and the employment of M240B machine guns. The unique range capabilities and maritime infrastructure at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point provide Port Security Unit 301 with advanced training opportunities not available at their home station in Massachusetts. MCAS Cherry Point’s outlying fields and bombing targets offer critical training environments that enhance the tactical proficiency and operational readiness of Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security forces.
“MCAS Cherry Point allows us to have practical training. We do a lot of training on the range, but we can’t shoot at anything moving.” Said U.S. Coast Guard Boatswain’s Mate First Class Anthony Reynolds. “MCAS Cherry Point is unlike anywhere we have been, giving us the opportunity for real practical training.”
