SLIVEN, Bulgaria — Soldiers from the 117th Military Police Battalion took time to explore the local culture of Sliven during Beyond Horizon 2025.
The Soldiers experienced cultural immersion opportunities that allowed them to engage with locals, share meals, and develop a deeper appreciation for the host nation and its people.
"It is essential to engage with and understand other cultures," said 1st Lt. Christopher Earl. "Such experiences broaden your perspective and provide valuable insight into the conditions and traditions of our allies."
From sampling local dishes to navigating cultural norms, the experience prompted meaningful reflection.
"I would like to take their culture back home with me," said Pfc. Cyrus Dooley. "This experience has broadened my understanding of the customs and ways of different cultures."
Staff Sgt. Justin Irwin embraced the unfamiliar by ordering a variety of local foods to share with his fellow Soldiers.
"I am not entirely certain of all the items I tried; some were quite enjoyable, while others were less so," said Irwin with a smile. "I ordered a substantial portion to share with my team because many individuals are often hesitant to venture outside their comfort zones. My goal was to embrace the opportunity to try something new."
The visit was informal but impactful, providing Soldiers with an opportunity to build camaraderie, recharge mentally, and broaden their perspectives. All of this while reinforcing the importance of cultural awareness during overseas missions.
