With a mission-focused mindset, Sheet Metal Mechanic Ryan Pennell is proud to support Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in getting submarines back into the fleet to deter adversaries and secure the nation’s safety.

Pennell, an apprentice in the Worker Skills Progression Program, has spent the last three years working in Code 920 working on lockers, stows and miscellaneous metal components for submarines. “What I like most about my job is working with an amazing team that work together to get the job done,” said Pennell. “It’s also a great way for me to serve my country as a civilian.”

Pennell has an outward mindset when fulfilling his role in the safe overhaul, repair and modernization of the U.S. Navy’s nuclear powered attack submarines. That is why Pennell ensures that he is taking all the necessary precautions to do his job safely while producing first-time quality. “Safety is my main priority. I’ve always been told that the main goal should be to go home exactly how you came into work that day.”

A typical day for Pennell involves a team meeting to plan out the day’s tasks and gather his tools to go shipboard, modifying, repairing and installing submarine components. Pennell loves what he does, and the opportunity for advancement at PNSY. “There’s definitely room for growth at the shipyard. From the apprenticeship program you can move your way up to a work leader, a subject matter expert, a supervisor, and eventually become a zone manager,” said Pennell. “I feel extremely proud to assist the Navy and DoD in protecting our nation.”
