POZNAN, Poland – U.S. Army senior leaders from multiple installations and forward operating sites across Europe attended V Corps’ spring senior leader forum from April 23 to 25.

Hosted by Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, V Corps Commanding General, the forum was designed to gather senior leaders from the area of operations at Camp Kościuszko to discuss and learn. Blocks of instruction during the forum included intelligence, Army modernization, Futures and Concepts, Challenges and Opportunities from NATO’s Eastern Flank, Unit Initiatives, and the Command Vision.

“One of the greatest things about our Army is the command team relationships,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Phil Blaisdell, V Corps Command Sgt. Maj. “As the old saying goes, ‘the infantry wins battles, and logistics wins wars.’ We have to be prepared for large-scale combat operations. This corps is like no other. We have brigades from different corps and battalions from different brigades, all working toward one mission: to deter aggression and secure NATO’s Eastern Flank.”

Among the guest speakers at the forum were Maj. Gen. John Rafferty Jr., Commanding General of the 56th Artillery Command, and Gen. Christopher Donahue, Commanding General of U.S. Army Europe Africa and commander of Allied Land Command. General Donahue discussed theater and V Corps initiatives to enhance warfighting capabilities via online teleconference.

Over the course of two learning days, senior leaders seized the opportunity to discuss key topics such as crisis response, interoperability, and sustaining operations over distance. As the forum concluded, leaders were ready to further bolster their unit’s readiness within V Corps’ area of operations across Europe.

“I have been in command for about a year now, and I have watched things change in the near term and have seen other things not change at all,” said Costanza. “Just by being in Europe, we are assuring our NATO allies. However, to be able to deter, we must be combat credible. It’s great that our Soldiers are present on installations across Europe, but if we aren’t combat credible, there is no deterrence. That is why we are prioritizing lethality and combat credibility.”

The primary mission of V Corps in Poland is to conduct operational planning, mission command, and oversight of rotational forces in Europe. It also provides additional capabilities in support of allies and partners in the region.
