April is a significant month dedicated to raising awareness around two critical issues that affect our communities: Child Abuse Prevention Month (CAPM) and Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). Both observances serve as reminders of our shared responsibility to ensure safe and nurturing environments for all individuals.
Taking a stand against sexual assault and child abuse. On 17 April 2025, Col. Thai and Chief Price officially recognize April as SAAPM and CAPM. “This is one way we're building a team to focus on Airmen and their families, so that they can focus on readiness and lethality” stated Col. Thai.
Child Abuse Prevention Month highlights the importance of protecting children from abuse and neglect. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, hundreds of thousands of children experience abuse each year, leaving lasting impacts on their well-being and development. This month serves as a call to action for communities, families, and individuals to unite in efforts to prevent child abuse through education, support, and intervention.
Promoting healthy relationships, positive parenting, and community resources are vital components of prevention. By educating parents, caregivers, and children about the signs of abuse and the importance of open communication, we can strengthen families and create safer environments for our youth. Everyone has a role to play, from recognizing potential signs of abuse to accessing available resources and support systems.
Simultaneously, April is also Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. This observance underscores the ongoing need to address and combat sexual violence. According to the Department of Defense, approximately 6.0% of service members reported experiencing unwanted sexual contact in the past year. Additionally, civilian statistics reveal that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 70 men will experience sexual violence in their lifetime. These numbers reinforce the urgent necessity for comprehensive prevention strategies.
Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month aims to educate individuals about consent, respect, and bystander intervention, fostering a culture of empowerment and accountability. The military and civilian communities are encouraged to engage in discussions and training that promote awareness and support for survivors. By breaking the silence surrounding sexual violence, we can work collectively to create safer environments for all.
As we observe Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month this April, let us remember that prevention begins with awareness, education, and community support. Together, we can build a culture that protects the vulnerable, supports survivors, and fosters respect and dignity for all individuals.
