North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) Soldiers hosted a training event for Tarheel Challenge Academy candidates at Camp Butner in Stem, North Carolina, on April 23, 2025.

Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy is a military-style program for at-risk teenagers sponsored by the NCNG. The program is part of the National Guard Youth Challenge Program, which was established in 1993. The program's purpose is to provide an avenue for cadets to earn a high school diploma or equivalent.

"It all starts with your mindset; if your mind has changed, the environment will become different," said Shanetta McNeil, a teacher at Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy. The training included land navigation, nutrition, exercise, and obstacle courses. Candidates were assigned to small teams and given a block of instructions on how to complete the event before participating.

"The cadets enjoy having the opportunity to speak with National Guard members about future endeavors. There are a lot of cadets who would love the opportunity to join the military," said Steve Berger, activity coordinator of Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy.

The academy provides cadets with the opportunity to change their future and succeed outside a traditional school environment. They do this with their community partners, like the National Guard. "I planned this training to help instill discipline, confidence, and teamwork," said Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Kornegay.
