FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. — Maj. Gen. Scott Naumann, the commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division and Joint Task Force–Southern Border, visited Soldiers stationed in Gila Bend and Ajo, Arizona April 10. The visit focused on assessing mission readiness, checking on troop welfare, and reinforcing his command priorities.
In Gila Bend, Naumann visited C Company, 2nd Battalion (General Support), 3rd Aviation Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He received briefings on current missions and familiarized himself with the unit’s activities, underscoring his commitment to providing resources and support while emphasizing the importance of readiness and well-being.
“Being on the ground with Soldiers gives you a clearer picture,” Naumann said. “You see how they’re living, how they’re working, and what they need to stay sharp and motivated.”
Later in Ajo, Naumann met with Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, who are currently operating alongside the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the Ajo Station. He toured their operational and living areas, received updates on their responsibilities, and gained insight into daily operations and challenges.
Effective leadership starts with understanding what Soldiers are facing—whether it’s the pace of their mission or the conditions they’re living and working in. Army doctrine notes that when leaders stay engaged at that level, they’re better able to build strong teams, spot challenges early, and sustain operational effectiveness (FM 6-22). That mindset was clear throughout Naumann’s battlefield circulation.
During both visits, Naumann encouraged Soldiers to maintain high levels of preparedness and stability, urging them to communicate any needs through their chain of command. He also recognized several standout performers with command coins for their dedication and contributions to the mission.
“Everything we do here ties back to our priorities—our people, staying ready, transforming to meet future challenges, and honoring what it means to wear the uniform,” said Naumann. “That’s how we stay relevant, today and tomorrow.”
Both units remain a vital part of the task force’s mission along the southern border. C Company, 2-3 Aviation—formerly known as the 498th Medical Company (Air Ambulance)—continues its longstanding MEDEVAC mission, upholding a legacy of rapid response and lifesaving support.
