JFK Warriors Triumphant in Playoff Battle

The John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) basketball team preserved through the Callaghan Fitness Center League at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, reaching the league’s playoff bracket. The team, composed of Sailors from across the command, competed in the double-elimination tournament starting Feb. 18, and reached the championship game on Feb. 24. Ultimately, the Warriors dominated in the championship game, winning 84-44.
The Warriors faced tough competition throughout the season, including their biggest rival, “Just Shoot It.” Head coach CS1 Dre Thompson acknowledged the challenge ahead but remains confident in his team’s ability to compete.
“We’ve beaten the top teams in the league, but for some reason, we always struggle against Just Shoot It,” said Thompson. “It’s all about execution and communication.”
    Strengthening Teamwork and Mission Readiness
The Warriors bring together Sailors from all ranks and departments, fostering camaraderie and enhancing teamwork on and off the court.
“We have everyone from lieutenants to chiefs, E-3s to E-4s,” said AO2 Elijah Walker, who plays point guard and shooting guard. “It’s about building bonds and working toward a common goal.”
Walker highlighted communication as a key focus for the team heading into the playoffs.
“If we can stay on the same page and execute our game plan, we have a great chance to win,” he said.
Beyond basketball, the team has played a vital role in fostering better communication and collaboration among Sailors.
“A carrier is a floating city, and basketball helps us connect across departments,” Thompson said. “It makes it easier to work together when we’re on duty.”
    Pushing for Victory
As the team prepares for the playoffs, several players have stepped up as potential MVP candidates, including ITC Glover, AO2 Walker, and Lt. Matt Faber.
Walker, reflecting on a standout performance against the McCormick Legends, recalled a moment when he led the team on a 12-0 scoring run.
“My teammates kept encouraging me, and we pulled off the win,” Walker said. “That’s what this team is all about – supporting each other.”
With a strong sense of unity and a mission-focused mindset, the JFK Warriors are ready to battle for the championship and bring pride to John F. Kennedy.
