WASHINGTON – U.S. Army Pfc. Trey Woodard, a public affairs mass communication specialist with the 50th Public Affairs Detachment from Fort Stewart, Georgia, achieved a remarkable personal milestone while supporting the 60th Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C.

Woodard completed his first ultra-marathon, the grueling JFK 50 Miler, demonstrating his commitment to pushing physical and mental limits.

Woodard, a native of Rock Hill, South Carolina, joined the Army on June 22, 2023, and has carried his passion for running since his high school days at Northwestern High School, where he competed in cross country and track. A former Air Force JROTC cadet, Woodard continues to embody discipline and perseverance in all his endeavors.

“I wanted to push myself and be able to say I did it,” said Woodard, reflecting on the ultra-marathon. Rating the challenge as a “9/10 difficulty,” he expressed pride in conquering the 50-mile course.

Held annually in November, the JFK 50 Miler is a historic race tracing its roots back to 1963 as part of President John F. Kennedy's push for physical fitness.

The course weaves through Maryland’s scenic Appalachian Trail, C&O Canal Towpath, and rolling country roads, testing participants' endurance and resolve. It is one of the most popular ultra-marathons in the country, attracting both seasoned and first-time ultra runners.

Only about 0.05% of Americans attempt ultra marathons, making Woodard’s accomplishment a rare feat.

Currently on temporary duty assignment in Washington, D.C., Woodard is part of the military team supporting the 60th Presidential Inauguration, a cornerstone event in the nation’s democracy. The military’s role in the inauguration includes ceremonial duties, logistics and documentation.

“Being here and participating in the inauguration is a wonderful experience,” Woodard said. “I enjoy the joint atmosphere and being a part of something as significant as the peaceful transfer of power.”

Chief Mass Communication Specialist Kathleen Gorby, who has completed several ultras during her military career, joined Woodard on the ultra-marathon. Gorby encouraged Woodard to take on the challenge while they were both assigned to the inauguration mission.

“I’ve done a few of these in my life, and when I reported to the inauguration, I asked if anyone wanted to join me,” said Gorby. “Woodard raised his hand. I was surprised because I don’t have too many people take me up on my offer to run an ultra with me.”

Gorby expressed pride in Woodard’s perseverance and success. “I’m very proud of Woodard's effort. Even when it got tough, he pushed through, never giving up.”

Woodard’s achievements both on the racecourse and in his Army career highlight his drive and commitment. With only about 0.4% of Americans currently serving in the Army, and even less supporting the inauguration, Woodard exemplifies the determination and resilience of the nation’s service members.

As Woodard continues to serve and challenge himself, his story serves as inspiration for others to strive for their best, whether on the battlefield, at a historic event or during a grueling 50-mile run.
