MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – Over 1,000 people gathered together on an early Autumn morning to run the 2024 Marine Corps Marathon Turkey Trot at MCB Quantico, Nov. 23.
“The Turkey Trot is an important event cause it’s a family event that starts off the holiday season,” said U.S. Marine Corps Col. Jenny Colegate, the commanding officer of MCB Quantico.
Service members, families and locals all participated in the only holiday-themed event offered by the Marine Corps Marathon Office. It consisted of two events: a one mile run for children and a 10K.
Participants from ages six to 80 years old competed in the race across the base. Some participants ran for the experience, and others ran for time.
“The Turkey Trot is a lot different from the other races that the MCM hosts,” said Jonathan Ladson, the overall winner of this year’s 10K, finishing at 33 minutes and five seconds. “This event is one of the smaller ones but it's very popular amongst families and younger kids.”
The MCMO also tracked and celebrated the top ten finishers for each age group at an awards ceremony. They also handed medals to those who finished the course and offered T-shirts and food for participants.
This year’s Turkey Trot once again highlighted the importance of community, family, and tradition as participants of all ages came together to celebrate the start of the holiday season. With spirited competition, camaraderie, and shared experiences, the event showcased the enduring appeal of the Turkey Trot as more than just a race—it's a cherished gathering that unites service members, families and local residents in the spirit of the holiday season.
