CONTINGENCY OPERATING LOCATION Q-WEST, Iraq — Soldiers of 1st Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment headquartered in Henderson, Tenn. participated in the Easter Fun Run sponsored by Moral Welfare and Recreation on COL Q-West the morning of April 3, and brought home four medals.
"I run because two years ago I broke my femur racing motocross and the doctor said I would be lucky to walk, and was lucky to be alive by the time I got to the hospital. I have two screws in my left ankle, and a rod and two screws in my left femur, but that isn't enough to stop me, especially since running is a big part of my family's life. My 13-year-old daughter Whitney has placed 1st and 2nd in the nationals and state (Kentucky) for the last two years in track and cross country," said Master Sgt. Christopher T. O'Bryan of Harned, Ky., a Soldier from the 2113th Transportation Company headquartered in Paducah, Ky. and currently attached to 1/278th ACR.
O'Bryan along with two other Soldiers and a guidon team from 1/278th were able to bring home first place medals for their divisions. O'Bryan won the 36 and older division for males. Spc. Steffen Miller of Clarksville, Tenn., a Soldier in Bayonet Troop 1/278th ACR, won his division for the 18 to 35 year old males. 1st Lt. DesiRee Nicely from Garden City, La. won the 18 to 35 year old female division. Additionally, the guidon team from Bayonet Troop composed of Spc. Justin Spence of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, Sgt. Joshua Shemwell of Big Rock, Tenn., Pfc. Joshua Schmelzer of Murfeesboro, Tenn., Spc. Robert Gray of Crossplains, Tenn., and Spc. Bradley Allen of Murfeesboro, Tenn. was able to win the guidon division for the race.
The 1/278th ACR took home the hardware, but they also showed up in force. There were numerous Cobra Squadron runners in the race. The 1/278th ACR's command team, Lt. Col. Jimmie L. Cole, Jr. from Mt. Juliet, Tenn. and Command Sgt. Maj. Michael L. Butler of New Johnsonville, Tenn., even participated.
"It's a great way to do PT (physical training) and support our guys," said Butler.
"I couldn't let my brother Maj. Ross beat me. He beat me in a race once and has never let me live it down, so I take every opportunity to beat him that I can," said Sgt. 1st Class Will Ross, the non-commissioned officer in charge of electronic warfare for 1/278th ACR.
Maj. Warner A. Ross, II is the operations officer for 1/278th ACR. He ran in the last race, the St. Patrick's 5k, uncontested by his brother Will.
Whether they were there for competition, PT or support, the Troopers of 1/278th ACR, Cobra Squadron, did an excellent job and the medals to prove it.
