Orangeburg, S.C. – During the fiscal year, October 2023 to October 2024, Sgt. Brenda Paris met her mission by March of 2024. Not only did she meet her mission for the year, but she was also the first to do so in South Carolina. Paris achieved this by sticking to a simple mind set, of being determined, being seen, and building relationships.
“I make sure to visit the high schools in my area every week,” Paris said. “I make sure to go to sporting events, and I build relationships with staff at the high schools.”
Visiting a recruiter’s office or recruitment center can be intimidating for many. Paris, however, starts her path to success by meeting individuals at home or another familiar setting where those interested feel most comfortable. She also encourages leads to bring along a family member or friend, creating an environment where they can feel more relaxed. Paris’ approach revolves around engaging leads in conversation, particularly those who may not be a part of military families or have inaccurate perceptions of military life. She views these misconceptions as her primary challenge, aiming to replace preconceived notions with realistic expectations.
“I was an introvert and I wanted to become more of a people person,” said Paris. “I thought being a recruiter would help with those skills and I also wanted to change lives.”
Changing one life at a time enables Paris to personalize unique paths for leads so they can achieve their goals within the South Carolina National Guard. Ultimately building strong relationships based on honesty and straightforward communication, even when addressing tough subjects is key.
Paris' personal journey from combat medic to Honor Guard, to accomplished recruiter is a testament to her genuine passion for service. Through her commitment to authenticity, empathy, and community engagement, Paris not only exceeded her recruitment goals but also transformed lives by guiding individuals towards fulfilling careers in the South Carolina National Guard. Her story exemplifies the profound impact that personal connection and perseverance can have in military recruitment. She is a second-year recruiter with wisdom beyond her tenure, forming a legacy of inspiration and service in her community and beyond.
