FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. - Jesse Avina and Ruben Hernandez, military technicians (MILTECHs) with the 63rd Readiness Division, are normally found working together as Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairers at Area Maintenance Support Activity 32 (AMSA 32) in Van Nuys, California, but this month they are augmenting Equipment Concentration Site (ECS) 170 supporting CSTX 24-01 at Fort Hunter Liggett.

Avina, who has been in the Army Reserve for eight years and a MILTECH with the 63rd RD for six years, said, "I love learning in the field...my confidence has grown." He laughed and jokingly said, "Before coming to the 63rd, I couldn’t fix a thing, now I can fix anything.”

Avina's dedication to the 63rd RD is evident as he's encouraged seven other Soldiers to join his team at AMSA 32. Hernandez is one of those Soldiers. While he and Avina both serve in the 730th Transportation Company in Bell, California, as Wheeled Vehicle Mechanics (91B) as Army Reserve Soldiers, Hernandez explains the best part of his job is teaching Soldiers how to work on their unit’s equipment.

While at Fort Hunter Liggett, the ECS is an integration site of mechanics for units participating in and supporting CSTX 24-01. Avinas and his team provide the experience to vehicle and generator mechanics from various units including military police and quartermaster companies who are conducting maintenance on their unit equipment.

Robert Elliot, who the other techs call “Green," a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic with the 308th Chemical Company in Vallejo, who also works as a MILTECH at AMSA 32 explained that many Army mechanics only drill once a month and are challenged to properly maintain their unit’s equipment.

“I’ve been working for AMSA for about two years,“ Elliot said. “It’s nice to have a job where I can do preventative maintenance on my unit’s equipment.”
