ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire — the combined Engineer and Logistics Advisory Team (ELAT 2522) of the 2nd Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB) recently took part in Journées de la femme Militaire, a three-day seminar to celebrate Ivorian military women’s achievement in Abijan.
From April 24-26, the Soldiers of ELAT 2522 participated in the seminar, hosted by the Ivorian Armed Forces and Ivorian Senate President Kandia Kamissoko Camara, to celebrate the contributions of women within its ranks, both past and present.
"Seeing women in leadership roles here mirrors our commitment back home to empower all service members equally," said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Nichole Milani, ELAT 2522 logistics advisor.
ELAT 2522 deployed to Cote d’Ivoire in late March, as part of the 2nd SFAB’s regular rotations to the African continent. These rotations provide persistent presence in Africa and help enhance African partner capacity by advising and assisting partner forces on a host of U.S. Army key functions.
“Deploying to Côte d'Ivoire is an opportunity for us to apply our specialized skills in real-world settings and truly make a difference," said U.S. Army Capt. Martin Witt Jr, ELAT 2522 team leader. "Our mission here extends beyond tactical advisement; it's about building a foundation of trust and capability that will benefit the Ivorian military for years to come."
The 2nd SFAB’s role in Africa provides value beyond simply advising and assisting partner African forces, daily exchanges and participation in seminars such as this serve as a means to strengthen partnership on a personal level.
"Every interaction we have with our African partners is a chance to deepen our mutual understanding and strengthen our bonds," remarked Sgt. 1st Class Catherine Ponce. "These engagements are not just about sharing knowledge; they're about building enduring partnerships that resonate on both a professional and personal level."
The seminar's activities included career days, tactical demonstrations, and strategic discussions, all aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of women's roles in the Ivorian military.
“Participating in this seminar re-affirmed my appreciation of the crucial roles women play in our military forces," concluded Witt. "These discussions and demonstrations are not just about visibility but about integrating these insights into our everyday practices to foster an inclusive military environment."
