    Story by Maj. William Carraway

    Georgia National Guard

Colonel Jason Fryman was promoted to brigadier general and assumed command of the Georgia Army National Guard from Maj. Gen. Dwayne Wilson during a ceremony at the Clay National Guard Center May 3, 2024. Fryman is Georgia’s 17th Assistant Adjutant General-Army to serve since the position was created by the passage of the Georgia Military Forces Reorganization Act of 1955.

To symbolize the change of command, Maj. Gen. Tom Carden, Adjutant General of the Georgia National Guard, transferred the organizational colors from Wilson to Fryman. Fryman then placed the colors in the guardianship of Command Sergeant Major John Ballenger, State Command Sergeant Major of the Ga. ARNG.

Fryman graduated from the University of North Georgia in 1996 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Following branch qualification in aviation he began a long association with Georgia National Guard aviation, commanding units at the company through brigade level culminating with command of the 78th Aviation Troop Command from August 2018 to August 2021. During Fryman’s command tenure, the 78th ATC supported domestic response missions as well as company and battalion-sized deployments to Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and the southwest border of the United States. The 78th ATC also supported numerous overseas training exercises including Noble Partner 20220 in the country of Georgia, for which Fryman served as exercise director.

Following brigade command, Fryman served as chief of staff and senior guard advisor for the Future Vertical Lift and Cross-Functional Team, Army Futures Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. Returning to the Georgia National Guard in October 2023, Fryman assumed duties as chief of staff of the Georgia Army National Guard.
